Interpersonal Communication
Interpersonal communication is communication between two people. It is a behaviour that takes place during human interactions. A way in which people communicate with each other either verbally non-verbally or both.
It involves a kind of dyadic interaction which means it is a two-way communication. It is goal-oriented and aims at achieving the desired result. The outcome may be cooperative or conflicting at times.
Types of Interpersonal Behaviour
Cooperative Behaviour
It is a form of behaviour in which two person is mutually gratifying.
Both persons are engaged in complementary behaviour.
Conflicting Behaviour
It may be possible that due to personality differences and different value systems, a conflict may arise. It should be avoided and the other type of behaviour should be implemented. It can be only done when there is mutual respect and concern for the other person.
Aggressive Behaviour
In it, a person stands up for his rights in such a way that the rights of others are violated. This behaviour usually humiliates, dominates or puts other people down rather than simply expressing one’s own emotions or thoughts.
It is a form of an attack on other people. It may be in the form of physical violence, such as biting, hitting and kicking. It may also include verbal hostility, like threatening messages through emails, phone calls, or social media, making threats against someone’s life, or shouting.
Assertive Behaviour
A person stands up for his legitimate rights in such a way that the rights of others are not violated. It is better than the prior one. It is all about showing respect for the other person.
It is an honest, direct and appropriate expression of one’s feelings, beliefs and opinions. In this behaviour, a person often gets what he or she wants.
Non Assertive Behaviour
It is a behaviour in which a person’s rights are violated by others. It relieves himself in the situation by pretending how he or she would do things differently if it happened again. The signs of non-assertive behaviour are lack of eye contact, and looking down or away
